Meet Heather with Heather Van Houten Makeup & Hair
Last month I sat down with Heather to talk about her business, Heather Van Houten Makeup & Hair. Heather is my go-to lady for everything makeup related and she’s personally done my makeup for photos. I love her! She is so much fun to work with and we were laughing the entire time. Definitely check her out if you are in the market for an amazing makeup artist!
You can find her on the following social media platforms:
For my Vendor Spotlights, I ask a couple questions about wedding days and the planning process to help brides get to know their vendor both professionally and personally. Here is what Heather has to say!
What was your dream job growing up?
Up until I was 18, I wanted to be a lawyer and after that I wanted to be an actress on Saturday Night Live. And once I got to college, the costume design teacher took me under her wing because not only did I like doing theater but I had a really big art background. She was able to help me hone those skills and put them together and that’s when I fell in love with design.
When and how did you get into the wedding industry?
4 years ago. A girl on an Arizona makeup artist page on Facebook named Sarah San Marco (I’m not sure if that is spelled correctly. Sorry Sarah!) needed an assistant to help her with a wedding. I had done a couple weddings for friends, I knew I wanted to be a makeup artist. I didn’t know how you would go about it because it wasn’t as popular as it is today. So I kinda just put myself on the line! I was really nervous. She called me that night and we had an awesome conversation, I loved her. It was an amazing experience working with her and she employed me to work with her every weekend after that!
Why did you decide to start a business?
It just kind of happened! It was something that I always wanted to do but I worked with Sara every weekend for like 6 months or so and they she started referring me over overflow. I feel pretty fortunate that I was able to kind of walk-in to the high end part of the industry. At first it was just me, and then I brought in a friend to assist me. Then I started getting a lot of request for hair, so I brought in a hair artist. Once I started to get busier than what we could do, I started bringing in multiple teams. Right now, I have a solid 7 people on my team and 2 more that I can call upon for really busy days. I like keeping it at 7 because there’s no weak links, everyone is super strong and have a ton of industry experience. This helps me to ensure that every bride gets the best.
Where are you based and where do you meet with clients?
I am based here in Marana, Arizona. They can come to me for trials and everything and then I go to them for everything else. If it’s a Phoenix bride, I’ll go to them.
What is your favorite part of a wedding day/event day?
If I stay long enough for the groom to see the bride, that always makes me cry. If I don’t get to that, it’s when the girls take selfies of themselves and getting so excited about the way they look, that really makes me happy too.
Describe your favorite type of client.
A client that is super excited about what she saw on my website. She trusts me when we talk about what she wants and how I am going to translate it on her. Someone who is excited about my work, excited to book me and trusts my judgement.
What do you love most about weddings?
I love working with everyday women and that’s definitely why I feel like when I did my first wedding I thought this is definitely what I am supposed to be doing. As opposed to doing editorials and stuff, I don’t really like working with models. I like connecting with someone and being a part of one of the best days of their life. That’s so special to me. Being able to have conversations with women about real things. I mean, women are super vulnerable when they sit down in my chair. They don’t have any makeup on and they are trusting me to make them look amazing on a very important day. I think once you peel away all the fluff and get to the real person and talk to them while I’m doing their makeup. I think that’s why I love weddings. It’s just very real and intimate.
Your favorite celebrities and why?
I like Kate Hudson a lot because I think people have always told me I looked like her, I don’t know how much I look like her right now but Almost Famous is one of my favorite movies. She’s a natural, confident, bohemian type of gal and she’s got this relatable thing about her. Meryl Streep, she is sooo talented. She always blows me away. I remember being 4 years old, watching Kramer vs Kramer and crying. Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling, because.. well.. they’re hot.
If you could go anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?
The moon. I would go into outer space. I think I would never have the opportunity to do it, so if someone said they could make it happen, I would want to try it. Something that no one else could do, unless they’re an astronaut.
A big thank you to Heather for participating in our vendor spotlight!
